BIG 6 ENERGY SUPPLIER - SMART METERING BUSINESS

BACKGROUND

The company operates in the UK and is part of a multi-national group, which has businesses in a number of countries across the world. The Smart Metering business is an operational unit within the company and is a key part of the UK-wide smart metering programme.

The company believes that all harm is preventable; therefore the objective is Zero Harm.

SITUATION

Between 2008 & 2015 the company implemented and embedded a comprehensive ZERO HARM programme, which delivered a significant reduction in the number of injury incidents from field activities, reflecting its position as a mature business. However, the year-on-year improvements appeared to have reached a plateau with performance having levelled off, which is not uncommon for businesses involved in this type of activity.

As part of its continual improvement programme, the Smart Metering business decided to implement a behavioural change programme along with a number of supporting initiatives and employed the services of an external company (Setters). Setters was chosen as it was able to demonstrate that it had achieved excellent results by delivering similar programmes for other businesses using similar field-based activities.

Having taken the decision to implement the programme, the company also decided to engage the services of an external company with experience of the programme to help manage the roll out throughout their Smart Metering business.

SOLUTION

Nigel Champion of NEC Associates Limited had previous experience of the Setters programme in a number of organisations.

The company engaged the services of NEC Associates Limited to help establish the programme in the business in readiness for it to be taken over once the initial establishing work had been completed.

OUTCOME

The programme has been established in the Smart Metering business and been handed over in readiness for the next stage, which is being managed in-house.

A number of changes are already planned and feedback across the target audience has been very positive.

The client's Senior HS&E Manager and project lead said:

‘We chose Nigel to help us programme manage the roll out of the Setters behavioural safety programme because of his extensive knowledge of the energy industry and his prior experience of delivering the Setters programme within other organisations. Nigel has a passion for health and safety and has expert knowledge of the Setters programme. He was able to hit the ground running from day one and provided great support in rolling this out across our field metering operation in 2017.’
